Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) to develop strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions from port and shipping operations at Kandla in Gujarat.
The agreement, signed in New Delhi on Wednesday, will centre on research, policy development and knowledge-sharing to support low-emission shipping practices, combining ICCT's technical expertise with DPA's operational experience.
Under the collaboration, the two sides will identify high-impact decarbonisation measures across ships, fuels, port-linked transport and in-port equipment, while assessing the infrastructure and regulatory changes needed to implement them at scale. The exercise will aim to produce actionable recommendations for deployment.
Broader scope across port ecosystem
The partnership will examine emissions reduction pathways across the wider port ecosystem, including maritime operations, cargo handling and hinterland transport such as trucking. It will also assess enabling conditions such as infrastructure readiness and institutional capacity, along with policy and market mechanisms required to support low- and zero-emission solutions.
Amit Bhatt, India managing director at ICCT, said, "Through this partnership with Deendayal Port Authority, we will identify practical, high-impact solutions, from cleaner marine fuels to electric trucks and zero-emission port equipment that can substantially reduce emissions while enhancing operational efficiency."
DPA chairman Sushil Kumar Singh said the collaboration would help accelerate the port's transition. "Our partnership with ICCT will help accelerate Deendayal Port's transition into a future-ready, green port by combining our operational expertise with ICCT's global technical knowledge," he said.
Push for greener ports
The agreement comes amid increasing focus on decarbonising maritime transport and port infrastructure. ICCT works with regulators on transport emissions, while DPA plays a key role in India's maritime trade and is pursuing measures to improve sustainability and efficiency.
