“The Future of Coal Imports In India”: Mr. Devendra Arolkar, Head- Fuel Sourcing, L&T Power Development

Mr. Arolkar has over three decades of experience; 2 decades in L&T- Caterpillar JV for Mining Equipment and thereafter in Coal & Power Business Unit, to support/enable L&T’s foray in Power Generation.

Avid learner, excellent academics- Topper of Bombay University in Mechanical Engg, Board Topper for HSC, Board Rank holder for SSC; has Master’s Degree in Management from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Diploma in Foreign Trade from Welingkar etc. Successfully completed online course in Financial Engineering and Risk Management of Columbia University recently.

Global exposure includes multiple business visits to USA, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, Europe etc.

Areas of expertise/exposure in Coal and Power Sector include identification and evaluation of opportunities for acquisition/tie-ups for L&T, Coal Linkage-FSA, Setting up of Washery, managing Logistics; Coal Blocks auctioning- process/legal framework/evaluation, formulating documents like Contracts, NDAs, MOUs, Business Cooperation Agreements, JVAs, Petitions, EOIs, Tenders (floating as well as participating). Well versed in Financial Modelling, Project Finance, Valuation, Due Diligence, Regulatory framework etc.

Recent achievements are successful operationalization of FSA with SECL, BCCL and CCL, commissioning and operation of In-plant Railway siding, getting favourable Regulatory orders for coal cost pass through and instituting and operationalizing lean and agile coal supply chain (including coal beneficiation).

Currently responsible for handling all coal supply/contracting and regulatory related aspects of L&T’s 2 X 700 MW Rajpura Power Project (including arranging imported coal).
