New Far East - Chennai Service Launches at CITPL


PSA’s Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (CITPL) in India ushered in 2017 by welcoming a new Far East Chennai service jointly operated by seven consortium partners - CMA CGM, APL, RCL, K LINE, SIMATECH, TS LINES, COSCO.

The new service commenced at CITPL on 2nd January 2017 with the arrival of M.V ‘Baltimore Bridge’, a 4,500-TEU vessel operated by K Line. CITPL completed discharging/ loading operations on the vessel within 28 hours, handling 3,800 TEUs at a vessel productivity rate of 103 moves per hour.

Chairman of Chennai Port Trust, Mr. P. Raveendran highlighted that the new service is testament to the ability of Chennai Port and CITPL in providing world-class services to meet customer requirements.


Mr. S. Sankaran, Senior Vice President of K Steamship Agencies – K Line’s representing agent in Chennai – also shared, “The new Far East Chennai service will provide greater value and varied options to the EXIM trade in Chennai region. Chennai Port continues to be relevant and important because of its proximity to main cargo centres, as well as the reliability of container operations by a global terminal operator like CITPL. The stakeholders of the supply chains are looking for cost-effective and reliable services on the ocean leg. This service will meet this requirement.”

Mr. Mike Formoso, Managing Director of PSA India, said, “CITPL’s container volume grew 22% in 2016, reflecting Chennai’s status as the key container trade centre of South India. We have been proactively working together with Chennai Port Trust to cater to the growing demands of the Chennai Trade, and the terminal will continue to offer reliable services to ensure the success of the Far East Chennai service and promote the overall EXIM Trade.”

To commemorate the launch, a plaque was presented by Mr. P. Raveendran and Ms. Tan Bee Teng, CITPL's Head of Terminal and Corporate Services, to the Master Fernando Elorde of M.V ‘Baltimore Bridge’; in the presence of Mr. S. Sankaran and Mr. Raghavendra C.R., General Manager of K Steamship Agencies. Other officials from Chennai Port were also present.

M.V ‘Baltimore Bridge’ is one of five vessels deployed on the Far East Chennai service which connects Chennai to the important Far East market by providing the following port rotation: Chennai – Port Klang – Singapore – Manila – Busan – Qingdao – Shanghai – Shekhou – Singapore – Port Klang – Chennai.
