About Mr. Sanjay Kelkar

He was fortunate to be able to enter a profession where his interests in engineering and unconventionality amalgamated. After completing engineering and a brief pre-sea training ashore, he embarked on his first vessel in 1984. His career gave him opportunity to sail on various types of ships, new and old, while he grew through ranks to become a Chief Engineer. After sailing for over 18 years or so, he had a feeling of saturation and wanted take a look at marine related shore activities. As if his sailing experience was not good enough to hang his ‘Sea Boots’, he had a thrilling experience of an encounter with pirates during the last voyage. They had an armed robbery in Malacca Straits while vessel was on ballast and underway at 15 kt. Diplomacy over aggression succeeded and they all survived with minor cuts and bruises to some of the unfortunate ones.

Prior taking up a shore assignment he thought of arming himself with an additional academic qualification and cleared his ‘Extra Chief’ papers.
Before he decided to zero down on his core competence he thought of gaining experience in other facets of the shore management. He collected valuable experience in teaching / training and crewing for a couple years. He finally began his career in Technical Management of merchant vessels as a Superintendent. Having background of sailing on various types of ships helped him in getting interesting assignments as a ship manager. He also had overseas assignments in Germany and Singapore which enriched his overall experience in ship management.

Finally he took up the assignment in ASP Ship Management in 2011. Out of 5 globally operated ship management offices of ASP, he is heading Indian operations as a managing director.
