THE Port of Los Angeles handled 826,638 TEU in August, a 2.5 per cent year-on-year decline compared to neighbouring Long Beach throughput that fell 1.9 per cent last month to 679,543 TEU.
Still, Los Angeles said this past month was the second-strongest August in its history and the sixth-busiest month eve.
"In addition to being one of our top 10 busiest months, August marked the inauguration of APL's Eagle Express here in Los Angeles," said LA port executive director Gene Seroka.
"This weekly China-to-LA service provides an unmatched level of speed to market and is yet another example of our focus on customer service and response to market demand."
August imports decreased 2.8 per cent to 420,573 TEU compared to 2017. Exports increased two per cent to 162,466 TEU, while empty containers fell 4.9 per cent to 243,600 TEU.
Eight months into 2018, overall volumes have decreased 2.6 per cent to six million TEU compared to 2017 when the port set an all-time cargo record.
