Capt. T.K. Joseph
Capt. T. K. Joseph is one of India’s greatest seafarer mentors, Principal Emeritus of L.B.S. College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Mumbai. Born on 17th November 1932, his qualification are F. R. Met. S., M.R.I.N., F.C.M.M.I., M.I. Mar. Tech., and Extra Master (UK).
He completed his pre-sea training on training ship Dufferin in 1951 and sailed for about 10 years before joining as a faculty in LBS College. He is the first Indian to get the Thomas Grey Memorial Medal for the best performance at the Extra Masters Examination and securing first position in 1967 from the UK. He rose to become Vice-Principal in 1976 and Principal in 1986 of LBS College. He was Captain Superintendent of T.S. Rajendra, a training ship which has produced thousands of Master Mariners. He was appointed as consultant on Maritime Education by International Maritime Organisation.
During his tenure of 30-years as Maritime Trainer and Educationist, he has trained many students who rose to become Master Mariners and are now occupying topmost positions in many shipping companies. He is a proud Indian author of three books on Naval Architecture, Principles of Navigation and Ships Magnetic Compass which are part of many MTI textbooks conducting pre and post sea courses.
In appreciation of his consistently exceptional and outstandingly all-round and leadership contributions to the Indian and International Maritime Sector, he was awarded the ‘Sagar Samman Varuna Award’, the most prestigious maritime award in India.
