Capt. J.C. Anand
Capt. J. C. Ananad is a recipient of the Varuna Award, the most prestigious maritime award in the Indian Maritime Sector. Llyod’s List, Seatrade and other select maritime bodies have acclaimed his efforts with lifetime achievement awards. He has also received the Business Excellence award, Hall of fame and alumni achievement award.
He is one of the founder members of The Company of Master Mariner of India (CMMI). He was instrumental in setting up the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), the Indian P&I Club and played a significant role in the Indian ship classification society gaining full member status at the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
He was born on 4th march, 1922 in Sargodha in undivided India into an army family. He moved to Bombay at the age of almost 16 years and enrolled to train on TS Dufferin, the British navy’s cadet ship for Indians. Having started his career as a cadet in the pre-independence period, he eventually became a captain and a chief marine superintendent. He went on to becoming a ship owner and the President of INSA, a position he held three times.
Being the senior most member of Indian shipping industry, Capt JC Anand has achieved innumerable accolades throughout his professional journey. He was the first CEO of a liner shipping company to ring in containerisation. The first Convener of India’s first ever shipping and ship building conference (1961) inaugurated by the then president Dr. Radhakrishnan.
