The Adani Group plans to start work on its proposed 70,000 crore integrated coal gasification and downstream derivatives plant at Linga in Kalmeshwar near Nagpur this year. This is dubbed as one of the company's key ventures in clean energy. "The 70,000 crore investment is for the first phase. There are plans to add a second phase of the plant entailing an equal amount of investment in the future. The project is expected to create 30,000 jobs," said Jeet Adani, director of Adani Defence and Aerospace.

The project would develop advanced chemical manufacturing capabilities and reduce import dependence for critical industrial inputs," said Adani, as he described it as a platform for national self-reliance that would place Nagpur on the global map of clean-energy-linked industrial technologies.

Adani was in the city to attend the Advantage Vidarbha - Khasdar Audyogik Mahotsav in Nagpur, organised by the Association for Industrial Development (AID), a voluntary organisation working for the region's growth. The yearly event is patronised by Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari.

The downstream derivatives of coal gasification include syngas, ammonia, and hydrogen. The Adani Group also has an underground coal mine at Gondkhairi. "Details like those about sourcing coal for the gasification project would be figured out later," said Adani.

This would be the fifth coal gasification project planned in the region. The other two players planning a coal gasification projects are public sector mining company Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and another private player, New Era Tech. Founder of New Era Tech Balasaheb Darade, while welcoming Adani's announcement, said the region is set to lead the country's energy transformation.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) would be acquiring around 400 acres of land on behalf of the Adani Group for the proposed coal gasification project, said sources.

On other ventures, Adani said there are plans for expansion of the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations. Adani Group and Prime Aero, a company promoted by NCP leader Praful Patel's son Prajay Patel, are in Indamer Technic which has an MRO in the MIHAN-SEZ.

On question about company's plans to manufacture aircraft, Adani said a call would be taken based on consultation with its partner. Adani Group entered into a strategic tie-up with Embraer for setting up an aircraft manufacturing facility in the country.
