Deendayal Port Authority wrests top cargo handler crown from Paradip Port Authority in FY26

news-details

Deendayal Port Authority, the state-owned entity that runs the port at Kandla in Gujarat, has wrested the top slot in cargo handling among Union government ports by loading 160.11 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in FY26, ending the two-year reign of compatriot Paradip Port Authority in Odisha.

Paradip Port Authority ended FY26 with cargo volumes of 156.45 mt. In FY24, it ended Deendayal Port Authority's 16-year reign as India's biggest state-owned port by volumes handled.

In FY25, though, Deendayal Port Authority came tantalisingly close to wresting the top lost but lost out to Paradip Port Authority by a mere 2.5 lakh tons with the former handling 150.15 mt and the latter loading 150.41 mt.

The two ports, one located on the western coast and the other on the eastern coast, handle a combined cargo of more than 300 mt a year. Paradip Port mostly handles dry bulk cargo while Deendayal handles both dry and liquid bulk.

The rivalry between two state-owned ports has also set off a very healthy trend among government-run ports.
