The government has named Gaurav Dayal, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre as the new Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), per a government order.

The appointment of Dayal was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Saturday.

India's busiest state-owned container gateway has been without a full-time Chairman after Sanjay Sethi demitted office in January 2024 on completing five-year tenure.

Since then, the port authority's Deputy Chairman Unmesh Wagh was entrusted with the additional charge of Chairman.

This would be the second instance in recent years when an IAS officer from outside the Maharashtra cadre has been picked to lead JNPA, located in Mumbai. L Radhakrishnan, an IAS officer from Kerala cadre, ran the port as Chairman between 2009 and 2013.

Recently, the government appointed M Angamuthu, an IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, as Chairman of Mumbai Port Authority.

Traditionally, the Chairman's post of both JNPA and Mumbai Port Authority are allotted to the Maharashtra cadre.
