CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container shipping line, is enhancing its connectivity and stepping up local hiring signalling its commitment to the India market.
The French container shipping firm has announced additional port calls at Hazira on its India-West Asia service facilitating manufacturing and petrochemical exports from South Gujarat.
“The additional call at Hazira is a strong demonstration of CMA CGM’s long-term commitment to India and its role as key engine of global trade,” said Atit Mahajan, managing director, CMA CGM India.
Alongside introducing new services, the company has also stepped up its hiring in India and has signed a letter of intent with Cochin Shipyard Limited for manufacture of six containerships.
The company said it aims to recruit 1500 seafarers from India by December-end. “This initiative supports skills development, local employment and enhances CMA CGM’s global fleet operations while contributing to India’s maritime talent ecosystem,” it said in a statement.
Like CMA CGM, other companies too are investing in India demonstrating their confidence in the country. Danish shipping giant Maersk has partnered Larsen & Toubro to explore shipbuilding opportunities and has flagged two of its vessels in India. These developments come in the backdrop of government’s policy reforms and its ambition to increase India’s merchant fleet.
