Mr. Shivkumar Iyer has over two decades of experience in maritime litigation before the Bombay High Court and other courts in India, involving a plethora of legal issues. He has been involved in matters pertaining to various maritime casualties. He has been liaising with Indian maritime and Customs Authorities on a regular basis. Over the last decade he has been involved in high valued international commercial arbitrations involving shipping and international trade disputes, international commodity sale-purchase contracts, taxation disputes, before International Commercial Arbitrations including LMAA, SCMA, and ICC.
He has considerable experience in arbitration associated litigation, ranging from appointment of arbitrators to challenge of arbitral awards. His expertise also extends to providing legal opinion on issues pertaining to reference to arbitration, workability of potential arbitrations, etc. He, along with the firm, has represented leading global companies as well as various Indian PSUs in high value arbitrations.
He obtained his degree in law from Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai University. Thereafter, he specialized in Maritime Law from the University of Southampton. He is well seasoned in handling disputes in both dry as well as wet shipping and has been a part of major maritime litigations before the Bombay High Court and other courts in India.
Prior to starting Renata Partners, he was a partner at Bose & Mitra & Co. and Ganesh & Co. He has also been involved in commercial arbitrations for shipping and international commercial disputes, international commodity sale- purchase contracts, etc. He has been actively involved in providing legal as well as strategic advice to clients.
He has been involved in handling and advising on several maritime casualties, ranging from collisions, groundings, oil spills to fatal accidents on board vessels leading to death and personal injury. He has first-hand experience in post casualty investigations and regularly works along with marine surveyors and officers and crew of vessels.
