India Ship Management Summit & Awards 2024 is being organised on 4th October 2024, Hotel Kohinoor Continental, Mumbai.

About AMET University

Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, established in 1993 with only 14 cadets, is a pioneer in the field of Maritime Education and began its groundbreaking journey into Maritime Education and Training (MET) during a time when MET had not yet been privatized in India.

AMET was the first private maritime academy to offer degree courses in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science in collaboration with BITS Ranchi. It was also the first to collaborate with A.P. Moller Maersk, introducing a dual degree program that aligned with the Directorate General of Shipping's (DGS) vision to develop dual competencies among Indian seafarers. It is of great significance to mention at this juncture that A.P.MOLLER Maersk carried out an intensive audit of the all the maritime academies in India to invest their sponsorship program and they found AMET to be the best of all and signed MOU with AMET which lasts until today and keeps getting strengthened with years of togetherness.

AMET was also the first private maritime training institution in India to collaborate with Glasgow College of Nautical Science and South Tyneside College, offering Higher National Diplomas (HND) in Nautical Science and Engineering.

In 2007, AMET evolved from an Academy into a University, extending its expertise into Maritime Research. The prestigious title of being India's first private maritime university was unveiled by Mr. Efthimios Mitropoulos, the then Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization and the first chancellor of AMET University.

In the year 2008, AMET became the first private maritime university to become a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), a significant recognition for AMET in the international arena.

By 2013, with two decades of expertise in Maritime Education and Training (MET) behind it, AMET was able to provide a comprehensive solution for any marine and maritime-related training globally. Its influence extended beyond national boundaries, contributing to the development of maritime human resources in countries such as Angola, Nigeria, Djibouti, Kenya, Malaysia, the Gulf region, Sudan, and Yemen. AMET has, over the years, trained over 1000 seafarers from 10 different nations, with a significant focus on the African continent.

Leading the way in technological advancements, AMET became the first private maritime academy in India to invest over INR 5 crores in 2012 to establish the country's first full- mission bridge and engine simulator from Kongsberg, Norway. This initiative allowed AMET to offer various value-added simulation courses to nautical and engineering officers enhancing their professional skills.

Over the last thirty-one years, AMET has transformed into a Centre for Excellence with global accreditation for providing quality education and training and carries out substantial research in the discipline of Maritime Education. About 4000 students are currently undergoing courses across 16 disciplines, of which around 300 students are foreign nationals. A few specialized courses are listed for your ready reference as follows B.Sc. Nautical Science, Graduate Marine Engineering, Graduate Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, Graduate Harbour and Ocean Engineering, Graduate Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Marine), BBM and MBA (Shipping and Logistics), and research programmes leading to a Ph.D. degree.

We feel proud to add that over the years, AMET has produced more than 20,000 qualified and well-trained cadets to cater to the needs of Shipping Industry. Today, AMET is an institution of choice for most of the Top Ship Owning and Ship Management Companies and Maritime Establishments for sourcing their future leaders and our relationship has morphed into one of partnership with a shared vision of Maritime Excellence. Some major Shipowners and Shipmanagers who recruit from AMET are, AP Moeller Maersk, V. Group, Fleet Management, OSM Thome, BW, MMSI, Goodwood, Wallem, NYK, MOL and MSI (IMC).

Testimonials of the Quality of Training (Awards and Recognitions):

AMET was conferred with the status of "Deemed to be University" under Section 3 of the UGC Act in 2008 and has the unique distinction of being the first Maritime University in India.

Besides, AMET is the only Maritime Educational Institution from India to become a permanent member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) of the 61 worldwide Maritime Universities of 32 countries.

In 2016 & 2017, AMET cadets were sponsored by the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) to attend the student forums in Tokyo and at the IMO headquarters in London, highlighting the quality of training provided by AMET University.

In 2021, NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), the official body recognized us as a Class "A" University for Ranking and Classification of Universities in India.

AMET has also been privileged to be conferred the prestigious "A-1 Outstanding Grade" for all the DGS approved courses from DNV-GL Classification Society, an authorized Agency for the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India earning this coveted ranking over six years, which is a testament to the placements the University earns each year.

Today, with over 4,000 cadets enrolled across three institutions dedicated to pre-sea, post-sea training and a Centre of Excellence, AMET has reached new heights in maritime education, training, and research. It has secured research grants worth, received government-funded projects, and is fully aligned with the New Education Policy initiatives of the Government of India.

With prestigious accreditations such as National Accreditation and Assessment council (NAAC), National Board of Accreditation (NBA), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), and Performance index in Maritime Education and Training (PIMET ranking 3 among global maritime institutions), AMET remains steadfast in its commitment to

enhancing the role of Indian seafarers in the global shipping industry. AMET University courses have also been accredited by various Agencies such as CRISIL, RINA (Royal Institute of Naval Architects, WMU (World Maritime University, Sweden).

The role played by AMET in creating an awareness about Maritime Education across all strata of people and across India is also worth mentioning here. Due to the intensive and continuous maritime promotional activities of AMET through digital, print and television media, even the rural people of the country including fishermen gained knowledge about the opportunities available for their children in the maritime sector and are represented amongst the cadets studying in the Maritime field.

As a testament to its commitment to gender neutrality, AMET actively engages in women empowerment campaigns by organizing exclusive recruitment drives for female cadets. It proudly stands as the only institution in India to host the highest number of female cadets, with over 100 girl cadets enrolled.

AMET has also been a pioneer in sponsoring the education of the cadets coming from the underprivileged class and would be more than happy to partner with Synergy Nordic Ship Management in any CSR or ESG initiative they wish to implement.

As a maritime university offering multidisciplinary courses, AMET provides cadets with exceptional exposure to marine and related fields, fostering their research interests and inclinations. Thus, we have started a minor degree in AI/ML to prepare cadets for the upcoming revolution in autonomous ships. In addition, we have provide the cadets an opportunity to attend a one day course on electronic engines, if they so desire.
