Baltic Dry Index Down to Near 1-Month Low
The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was down for a second session on Monday, dropping about 4.6% to its lowest since September 1 at 3,268 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, slipped by 7.5% to 5,351 points, likely influenced by lower iron ore prices due to ample global supply. At the same time, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell by 0.2% to 2,402 points, partly due to lower wheat prices. Amogn smaller vessels, the supramax index rose by 0.2% to 1.790 points.
