June 26, 2026 marks one year since the entry into force of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC), a significant milestone in advancing safe, sustainable and environmentally sound ship recycling across the globe.
To commemorate the occasion, Shri Killi Mohana Rao, Chief Surveyor (I/c) and officers from the Directorate General of Shipping, along with officials from MMD Kandla, participated in a Round Table Discussion on the “Status of the Ship Recycling Industry in India after Implementation of the Hong Kong Convention (HKC): Progress, Challenges and the Way Forward” held at Bhavnagar.
The Directorate actively participated in three panel discussions alongside representatives from government, the ship recycling industry, classification societies and other key stakeholders. The discussions focused on India’s progress in implementing the Hong Kong Convention, the challenges encountered during its implementation and the way forward for strengthening safe, sustainable and globally compliant ship recycling practices.
The event reaffirmed India’s commitment to environmentally sound ship recycling and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration among all stakeholders to further enhance the sector’s safety, sustainability and global competitiveness.
