In a landmark development, DP World has introduced its first-ever direct service connecting India to the East Coast of the United States from its Mundra terminal. This new service, part of the Mediterranean East Coast Loop (MECL), marks a significant step in enhancing trade links between India and the US, one of the world’s largest economies.
The company said that the inaugural call of the vessel MV Maersk Atlanta earlier this month solidified the commencement of this critical maritime route, which will serve key ports on the US East Coast, including Houston, Norfolk, Newark, Charleston, and Savannah. The service also connects to major international hubs such as Port Tangier Mediterranean, Salalah, and Jebel Ali.
The company added that this direct service offers improved transit times, boosting bilateral trade while strengthening economic ties between India and the US. Industries in India, including handicrafts, ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machinery components (OEMs), and textiles, will benefit from easier and more efficient access to the U.S. market, which has a growing demand for these products.
Ravinder Johal, Chief Operating Officer, Ports & Terminals, Operations & Commercial for DP World in the Middle East, North Africa, and Subcontinent, highlighted the importance of this milestone: “Efficient maritime routes and robust port operations are vital to supporting India's expanding role in global trade. The introduction of the MECL service is a significant step forward in strengthening direct trade connectivity, driving economic growth, and fostering business collaborations across these regions.”
With support from DP World’s global network, multimodal expertise, and seamless connectivity at Mundra, businesses across northern and western India—including Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh—are now poised to take advantage of the MECL service. The company said that the strategic location of DP World Mundra, with its deep-water quay, large container freight station, and dedicated rail connectivity, ensures efficient cargo movement for exporters and importers alike.
