Global steel production increased by 0.3 per cent to 145.3 million tonnes (mt) in August 2025 compared with the 144.8 mt a year ago.

According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the output in the top producer, China, was down 0.7 per cent at 77.4 mt. Meanwhile, India produced 14.1 mt of steel—an increase of 13.2 per cent from the year-ago period. In July 2025, it was 150.1 mt.

US output up

The US’ steel output was up by 3.2 per cent at 7.2 mt, while Japan recorded a 3.4 per cent dip in production to 6.6 mt.

Russia’s output declined 4.6 per cent to 5.5 mt. South Korea’s steel production, too, nosedived, going down 6.1 per cent to 5.2 mt. Türkiye’s steel output went up by 7.9 per cent to 3.4 mt, and Germany’s production went north by 10.5 per cent to 2.6 mt. The steel production in Brazil also recorded a dip at 2.9 mt, down 4.6 per cent. Iran produced 1.6 mt of steel, up 17.9 per cent.

Region-wise, Africa recorded a 3.8 per cent fall in steel production at 1.8 mt in August 2025, whereas Asia and Oceania produced 107.7 mt of steel, up by 0.4 per cent.

The EU (27) produced 8.8 mt of steel, down 2.8 per cent. Europe’s (Other) production increased by 2.1 per cent at 3.7 mt. West Asia’s output shot up to 3.8 mt, an increase of 21.5 per cent.

North America recorded a growth of 1.6 per cent at 9.1 mt of steel and Russia and other CIS nations along with Ukraine saw their figures fall by 4.9 per cent at 6.7 mt. South America’s production decreased by 5 per cent to 3.6 mt.
