Mormugao Port has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first port in India to receive official recognition as a green port under the Green Port Certification Programme. The announcement was made by N Vinodkumar, Chairman of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), during a roadshow ahead of India Maritime Week 2025.
According to Vinodkumar, the accreditation was granted by the Centre of Excellence on ESG and Circularity, Mumbai. He further highlighted that Mormugao is among the three ports identified by the World Bank for its global initiative to promote sustainable port operations.
This recognition follows Mormugao Port's earlier achievement of being the first in the country to introduce incentives and discounts for commercial vessels based on their Environmental Ship Index (ESI) scores, encouraging lower emissions from maritime trade.
In line with its green initiatives, the port has operationalised a 3MW solar power project, with plans to expand capacity to 5MW in collaboration with the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA). These steps underline MPA's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy.
Looking ahead, the port is also focused on adopting advanced technologies. Vinodkurnar revealed plans to integrate 5G connectivity into port operations to create a strong backbone for digitalisation and smart port transformation.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Shipping and Waterways is pushing for all major Indian ports to transition towards indigenously developed vessel traffic management systems (VTMS), reducing reliance on foreign software. Currently, seven out of twelve major ports have already implemented the homegrown system.
India Maritime Week 2025 will take place in Mumbai from October 27-31, bringing together participants from over 100 countries to discuss maritime innovation, sustainability, and growth opportunities.
