Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely inaugurate the Vizhinjam international seaport on May 2. Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will attend the function with other dignitaries.
Official sources said the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had sent a letter to the Kerala government confirming Mr. Modi’s visit.
The State police are preparing a comprehensive security scheme with the Prime Minister’ Special Protection Group concerning Mr. Modi’s visit.
The Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) operates the mega transhipment container. The facility has the unique geographical advantage of being closest to the International East-West Shipping Channel, which connects the Persian Gulf, southeast Asia, and the far east to Europe.
A significant portion of the world’s trade, including oil and other goods, passes through this vital shipping route.
The deep-water and all-weather port has a steep continental slope, which allows motherships and deep-draught vessels easy ingress and egress. The port’s depth also precludes the need for dredging operations, which helps it save on capital overheads and renders operations relatively more profitable than other similar facilities.
