Visakhapatnam: As part of multiple development programmes under the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually Inaugurated the Indian Ship Technology Centre (ISTC) at the Indian Maritime University (IMU), Visakhapatnam campus, on Saturday.

According to IMU officials, the ISTC will contribute to the shipbuilding industry through R&D in ship design, production, and capacity building for skilled manpower. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and software, which will position it as a key player in conceptualizing ship designs in India, they sald.

Prof V K Kesavadev, campus director, said that this centre once again demonstrates IMU's commitment to the Indian maritime sector by providing much-needed designs and technologies to support shipbuilding units.

Prof. K.M. Sivakholundu, director of ISTC, expressed confidence that the centre will contribute to the government's vision of making India a leading player in global shipbuilding, aiming to place the country among the world's top ten by 2030. "The centre is initiating a multipronged strategy to support the Industry as a single-window service provider in the areas of design, consultancy, training, and policy," he said.

The inaugural function was attended by various experts and practitioners from the sector, as well as officials, heads of departments, faculty, staff, and students from all six campuses of the Indian Maritime University.
